Sukhumvit Road is Bangkok's main tourist and expat corridor, stretching from Nana in the west through Asok and Phrom Phong to Thonglor and Ekkamai in the east. The 30 km journey from Suvarnabhumi Airport takes 30–60 minutes depending on traffic. Sukhumvit is served by the BTS Skytrain, making it the best-connected area in Bangkok for onward travel.

Note: All three figures are our own estimates, gathered when this page was written, and are shown for orientation only. They are not quotes and they are not live prices. The metered figure is what the meter shows, before airport surcharges, tolls and tip. Use the search box above for the actual price on your date.
The Airport Rail Link from Suvarnabhumi connects to BTS Phaya Thai in 30 minutes (45 THB). From there, transfer to the BTS Sukhumvit line. Total journey time is 40–55 minutes. Alternatively, a metered taxi costs 250–400 THB plus 50 THB surcharge and 25–75 THB in expressway tolls. Grab costs 200–350 THB. A pre-booked transfer costs $12–20 and takes you directly to your hotel entrance.
A taxi or transfer is better for groups of 2+, travelers with heavy luggage, late-night arrivals (after midnight when trains stop), or anyone staying at a hotel not directly on the BTS line. The Airport Rail Link is excellent for solo travelers heading to stations along the Sukhumvit BTS line.
Grab works well at Suvarnabhumi. The designated pickup zone is on Level 1 (same level as the metered taxi queue). Expect 5–10 minutes wait for a driver. Prices are comparable to metered taxis but fixed upfront.
For most travelers, pre-booking wins: the fare is locked in, a named driver meets you at arrivals, and the booking is documented if anything goes wrong. The official taxi counters at Bangkok (BKK) work fine but usually cost more than the meter alone suggests. Never go with unlicensed drivers who approach you inside the terminal.
Usually enough to get you there: pre-booked drivers are screened for basic English, while metered taxi drivers vary from fluent to phrasebook level. A Google Maps pin or the address in local script solves most misunderstandings before they happen.
A pre-booked driver follows your flight status and waits however long it takes - the fixed price does not change. The metered taxi queue at Bangkok (BKK) runs around the clock at most major airports, but peak-time lines are long and late-night service can be thin.
We estimate $12–20 for a pre-booked private transfer, and that type of price is final: airport surcharges, tolls and meet-and-greet are included. The meter in a regular taxi reads around $8–15, with surcharges, tolls and a tip still to come. A ride-hailing app quotes roughly $7–12. The search box above gives the actual price.
Plan for 30–60 min to cover the 30 km under normal conditions - rush-hour traffic in Bangkok can stretch that by another 20-30 minutes. With a pre-booked transfer your flight is tracked, so the driver adjusts to your actual arrival time.
On pure price, a ride-hailing app wins at around $7–12 - though you may need to walk to a designated pickup zone. Grab works well at Suvarnabhumi. The designated pickup zone is on Level 1 (same level as the metered taxi queue). Expect 5–10 minutes wait for a driver. Prices are comparable to metered taxis but fixed upfront. Weigh that against a pre-booked transfer at $12–20: slightly more, but with a driver waiting at arrivals and nothing added on top.
